Elliot collected Wilma from her dog run. Then he went to the barn, gathered fishing gear, and left The Downs, storming across the highway. His mind was filled with white noise—the same noise hissing and whining in his ear like a living thing. He passed the lighthouse and came to a stop on the rocks beyond it where they jutted into the ocean. He still hated fish, but they were clean protein and when he cooked them right, he could eat them without chewing. Also, this gave him some-goddamn-thing to do.

He stood there on the rocks, stewing on his thoughts, cursing the Universe, while Wilma zigzagged around the area, rudderless without orders from him.

After catching only a couple of fish, his temper was cooling along with the day. Enough was enough. Packing up the gear, he showed the inside of the bucket to Wilma. “One for you, one for me.”

She wagged her tail in enthusiastic support of that idea.

He was past the lighthouse and the truck carcass, most of the way up the slope, when he heard motor noise up on the road. The top half of a Land Rover appeared above the crest. From the driver’s window, a blonde head turned his way. Blue eyes held his.

Then the car was past.

And it was just Elliot alone on the hill with his dog.
